A NEW general surgeon has arrived at Colac Hospital specialising in breast disease, thyroid surgery, colon cancer surgeries and bariatric surgery.
Douraid Abbas, who is based at Ballarat, is visiting Colac twice a month for appointments and surgery.
Mr Abbas was originally from Brisbane but said he always wanted to work in the country.
“I always liked working in the rural areas,” he said.
“I took extra training so people in this town, Ballarat and the rural area will get the same class of treatment as they did in Melbourne.”
Mr Abbas said he felt welcome in the community and hoped to one day relocate to Colac permanently.
“The staff in the hospital is amazing, I met a lot of doctors in the area and they are all welcoming. I have been overwhelmed by the support from the community,” he said.
“I am looking to help more people get better, improve the quality of their life, alleviate their suffering and helping with preventions of treatment.”
Mr Abbas will join general surgeons Chris Sutherland and Dominique Robert at Colac Hospital.
Colac Area Health chief executive officer Geoff Iles said Mr Abbas’s appointment allowed Colac Area Health to move into a more sustainable general surgery.
“I can remember a time when we didn’t have general surgeons and it was really tough, it was tough on Chris and we don’t want to see that again,” Mr Iles said.
“The other part to it is it means we have a bigger base or stronger base to be able to develop our services further.”
