Experience inspires student

SUMMER WORK: Wildlife and conservation biology student Cathy Longmore is helping Parks Victoria with its Great Otway National Park fox baiting program during her summer ranger placement.

A Point Lonsdale student is finding career inspiration from a summer placement at Apollo Bay.

Deakin University wildlife and conservation biology student Cathy Longmore has returned for a second three-month stint at the coastal town as a Parks Victoria summer ranger.

Ms Longmore, 22, started this summer’s placement at the beginning of December.

Her duties include organising junior ranger program activities in the west Otways, and helping visitor services, Great Ocean Road Visitor Information Centre, natural values management and Great Ocean Walk teams.

She has also been involved with Parks Victoria’s fox baiting program in the Otways.

Parks Victoria has hired 29 summer rangers through a partnership with Latrobe, Monash, Deakin and Charles Sturt universities to cope with an increase in tourists over the summer holiday period.
