COLAC and district’s top police officer has welcomed a decline in the region’s crime rate.
Surf Coast Police Service Area Inspector Bruce Kitchen said overall crime fell 9.7 per cent last year in Surf Coast PSA, which covers Colac Otway and Surf Coast shires.
He said a decline in the number of robberies, property damage and residential burglaries in Colac and district was a testament to the district’s “positive police effort”.
Drug offences increased from 230 offences in 2009 to 340 offences in 2010, but Mr Kitchen said police had cracked down on drug-related crime.
Road fatalities increased from seven to 10 during a 12-month period but serious collisions decreased.
Mr Kitchen said off-road motorcycle accidents remained an issue for police.
