Visitor wins charity run

South Colac footballers Ryan Fennell, right, and Jake Veale lead a pack of runners during Friday night’s Flood Relief Fun Run.

WHEN Lorne’s Greg Bayley woke up on Friday morning, winning a 10-kilometre Colac fun run was the furthest thing from his mind.

He didn’t even know Colac’s inaugural Flood Relief Fun Run at Colac Botanic Gardens existed until the afternoon of the race when he picked up a copy of The Colac Herald at a cafe.

Bayley, who was victorious in 36 minutes and 29 seconds, said he was in Colac “to do some shopping”.

Bayley said he was training for a half marathon at Busselton in May.

Although he prefers riding bikes to running, being married to Australian marathon runner Lauren Shelley helps.

Colac Tigers footballer Kaden Newton was second in the 10-kilometre run at 37.48 minutes and Brad Hillman was third at 37.51, while Colac physiotherapist Sara Winter won the women’s section.

In the five-kilometre fun run, South Colac footballer Dave Marendaz was first across the line in 21.14, Mark Riches was second at 21.30 and Tiger Travis Woodmason was a further two seconds behind.

The fun run raised more than $5000 for the Queensland and Victorian flood appeals.
