Flag-winners now trying out for Victoria

City United cricketers Jarrod Walters and Dylan Slater have earned selection in a 48-player training squad, with a chance to represent Victoria at the National 12-and-under Championships in New South Wales early next year.

PLAYING in City United’s winning under-14 grand final side was not enough success for Colac cricketers Jarrod Walters and Dylan Slater.

The Sacred Heart Primary School Grade Six pupils, both 11, have a chance to represent the state early next year after gaining selection in a 48-player School Sports Victoria training squad.

They will attend training once a week in Melbourne, and will each vie for one of 13 spots to represent Victoria at the National 12-and-under Championships in New South Wales.

City United under-14 coach Jeff Johnson said Jarrod, right-hand batsman and pace bowler, and Dylan, right-hand medium pacer and keeper, had shown ability beyond their age in their first year of Colac district cricket.

Dylan, the son of Shane and Leanne Slater, impressed in the 2010-11 under-14 grand final, making 12 runs, not out, and taking 2-8 with the ball.

Jarrod, the son of Paul and Raelene Walters, made five runs, not out.

The championships at Barooga, near Echuca, run from January 7 to 15, 2012.
