Shop fire causes $250,000 damage

FIRE has caused at least $250,000 worth of damage to a Camperdown video shop.

Country Fire Authority crews went to the Manifold Street blaze around 2pm yesterday.

Camperdown CFA brigade’s Peter Stephens said crews from Camperdown and Cobden took about 40 minutes to get the blaze under control.

“The video shop will not be operating for a while,” he said.

Mr Stephens said the cause of the fire was unknown.

Rupanyup’s Dale Maggs said he was driving his utility through Camperdown on his way to Warrnambool about 3pm yesterday when he saw CFA crews attending the blaze.

“Manifold Street was blocked off by police cars and there were two appliances pumping water into what looked like the building,” he said.

“There were firemen on the roof, smoke billowing out of the roof, a fireman was brandishing an axe trying to remove corrugated iron from the roof to gain access to the fire.”

Mr Maggs said he could not see the full extent of the fire because the appliances obscured his vision, but he said it looked like the crews were trying to stop the blaze from spreading to adjacent buildings.
