APOLLO Bay residents say the town has been calling for a new pool for 20 years.
Apollo Bay Aquatic Centre Committee convenor Jane Gross has urged the community to support calls for an indoor heated pool.
Mrs Gross said the town’s existing outdoor pool had low patronage because it was too cold.
“We’ve got an outdoor pool at the school at the moment that is a good 20 years old and
that’s a bit tired and it’s not open very much for youth,” she said.
“We live in a very cold climate where the sea is freezing all year round, the pool’s not getting used much.”
Mrs Gross said people from Apollo Bay travelled to Colac or Lavers Hill for warm water pools to have hydrotherapy, swimming lessons and mothers and babies sessions.
“We’ve got a population of all ages that would really benefit – it’s been cried out for for 20 years, on and off, so I think it’s time,” she said.
Mrs Gross encouraged Apollo Bay residents, visitors and weekenders to complete an online survey about the need for an indoor pool.
The committee will also have a public meeting at
the Apollo Bay Hotel’s Krambruk room on August 31 from 7pm.
The committee’s planning consultants will investigate the feasibility of establishing the pool and present a report to Colac Otway Shire Council in November.
