New exhibition space for artists

Apollo Bay Arts Incorporated members Cate Cousland, Jo Forrest and Andrew Strang have welcomed an exhibition space at the town’s Mechanics Hall.

APOLLO Bay artists can display their work in a new exhibition space.

Apollo Bay Arts Incorporated will use a $4500 Colac Otway Shire Council grant to create a gallery at the town’s Mechanics Hall.

Group spokeswoman Jo Forrest said the group wanted to have the exhibition space ready by summer to attract tourists.

“Funding received from the shire will go toward wall repairs, painting, gallery lighting and hanging system,” Ms Forrest said.

“Money raised from our annual art show in January is also helping to cover costs,” she said.

Ms Forrest said the exhibition space would be in the hall’s library area.

“Our aim is to provide a permanent and affordable exhibition space in Apollo Bay for local and emerging artists,” she said.

“The plan is to have exhibitions changing monthly and opening nights.”

Ms Forrest said the hall committee members had played an important role in organising the space.

“Not only in terms of allowing us to manage the space but also in helping us to keep running costs down once it’s operating,” she said.

“The gallery is all about being an affordable and accessible space for the community.”

Shire mayor Stephen Hart said Apollo Bay Arts was one of 58 community groups to receive money in the latest round of grants.
