  1. He was not a victim of hackers at all. Nothing was hacked. He was the victim of a phishing attack. This involves a (usually) badly written email being sent out to thousands of people. The email will contain a link that will appear to send the victim to their bank’s website where they will be asked to hand over all their banking details.
It is really quite simple to avoid this sort of thing. Ring your bank and ask. Walk into your bank and ask. Go directly to your bank’s website rather then through any link sent in any email. Never click on a link in an email.
Employ common sense. If it doesn’t seem right, don’t do it.
Banks don’t send out this kind of email. They don’t ask you to verify your details like this on their website or they’ll cancel your account/suspend your account/ etc etc etc. Often these emails will tell you there has been suspicious activity on your account and you need to verify your details or they’ll suspend your account. These are never going to be genuine emails.
The easiest way to spot these phishing emails is the fact that they won’t be personally addressed to you. It will be dear customer, dear client or similar.
Often they will be sent to an email address that is not associated with your bank account and which the bank could not possibly know.
Just a little common sense please. Don’t hand over your banking details unless you are in the bank itself!!
Unfortunately for this man, while he has cancelled his cards etc they still have all his personal details, and they will have been onsold to who knows who.
Anti-virus software is not going to protect anyone from a phishing attact. Only common sense will.
