COLAC residents are today sweltering through their third day of above-30-degree-heat, with another scorcher on its way tomorrow.

  1. @ Swish That is what I meant, when they had gaps they could expand and contract but they they welded them together so you no longer hear the classic clacking noise, I have heard so many people say this only makes the rails buckle but what would I know

  2. Are you sure about that Jack500? I have to admit to working in the rail industry, but basic physics and common sense would suggest having one exceedingly long piece of rail would be far worse than several shorter sections joined together? Last time I went to school they taught me metal expanded when heated and retracted when cooled. Having ‘breaks’ in the rail helps accommodate for this. Not to mention I don’t know of any factories capable of producing a single length of rail upwards of 100km long, let alone the logisical nightmare of transporting it to the installation site.

    1. Umm… Swish! I think you’ve misunderstood what Jack is saying… Jack means that if the line had breaks it would be able to expand instead of buckling. Like expansion joints in concrete.

  3. The reason why the rails ‘might’ buckle during the hot weather is because some idiot thought it would be a good idea to weld the tracks together several years ago
