Birregurra’s Brian Jeffrey, left, and Royal Mail Hotel’s Nic Napolitano are preparing for tonight’s ice bucket challenge to raise money for motor neurone disease research.

BIRREGURRA’S John Cotton will brace himself tonight as friends empty litres of icy water over his head in the name of a “good cause”.

The “ice bucket challenge”, an international charity stunt, has reached the Colac district, with the Birregurra Football Netball Club president accepting the challenge to raise awareness of motor neurone disease and to raise money for research on the degenerative disease.

Friends and foes will gather at Birregurra’s Royal Mail Hotel to watch Mr Cotton endure minutes of freezing torture before taking his turn to nominate three people to take on the same challenge.

“A friend I have known for quite some time rang me up pretending to be someone else and said I had been nominated for the challenge,” Mr Cotton said.

“He’s always playing practical jokes on me, but by the time I realised who it was I had agreed to the challenge,” he said.

“I have played a few practical jokes but this one reversed on me.”

Mr Cotton said he was concerned about the cold water but said “it is for a good cause”.

“I will have to think about who to nominate,” he said.

Birregurra Royal Mail Hotel’s Nic Napolitano encouraged spectators to arrive before the 6.30pm start time to secure a good position in the pub’s courtyard.

Mr Napolitano said donation tins would be available for people to contribute money towards motor neurone disease research.
