State MP confident about poll

Terry Mulder and Simon Northeast plan to nominate for the seat of Polwarth at this year's state election, but the Labor party is yet to announce a candidate.

POLWARTH voters have 100 days to make a decision on who they will vote for in the state election, with just two candidates wanting to represent them.

Well done Colac Herald for getting the real issue out into the public. Polwarth needs a strong field of candidates to make no ones position “safe” By default. If a sitting member has done a good job then they deserve to be re-elected but they should never be safe simply because there is no credible alternative.

If that’s the case Mr. Mackenzie, keep up the good work!

It would be fair to say (I must be careful not to be defamatory) that crime rates and poverty have increased in the Colac region overtime. Perhaps the two are linked.
Polwarth has had a Liberal member since the year dot, so perhaps the local member should be put under the microscope and explain what he has done and will do to alleviate this terrible situation.
A newspaper purporting to have the interest of the community front and centre would attempt to seek answers to these important questions.
However, all that gets reported is when the Local Member is photographed handing out relatively small sums of money to selected business’s where the benefits to the community as a whole are questionable.

    1. I agree that these are issues of concern, and our regular readers see us seeking answers and solutions to Colac’s issues of concern in every edition of the Colac Herald, which comes out every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and is available at more than 50 outlets across Colac and district.
For example, today’s full edition of the Colac Herald calls on the Federal Government to find a solution to Colac’s high petrol prices, which certainly have an impact on people with low incomes.
We have been reporting strongly on the campaign to attract extra train services to Colac, and called on the State Government to come to the table on this area.
We have called for improved funding for our health and education sectors, and to fight disadvantage.
If people have missed this, I urge them to subscribe to the Colac Herald through a newsagent. People can find details of distributors here: https://colacherald.com.au/advertising/distribution/

  4. Also why was I warned to tread carefully with you paper due to it being a Liberal paper?

    1. Perhaps you should direct that question to the person who “warned” you.

As previously stated, the Colac Herald campaigns for the community, not for any political party.

Point taken Mr. Mckenzie, but let’s see if your coverage leading up to the election matches your rhetoric.

So let’s get this straight, the ALP candidate withdrew from the next election due to ill health yet the Colac Herald didn’t mention this instead implied they didn’t have a candidate yet to contest the next election. Either the journalist covering the story is incompetent or it was a deliberate attempt to undermine the ALP in Polwarth before the next election.
(Have you got the guts to print this or are you going to censor this to?)

    1. Unfortunately Mr Alexander, you don’t have this straight. We reported six weeks ago that Mr Brown had withdrawn his candidacy for personal reasons.
This particular article is not about Mr Brown or his health. This article is about Polwarth only having two candidates for the election, and lacking a Labor candidate.
As it stands, Labor has no candidate for Polwarth. We haven’t “implied” this, we’ve stated this as a fact. Reporting this important fact is not a deliberate attempt to undermine anyone. It’s a fact the people of Polwarth should know.
The Colac Herald does not campaign for any political party. We campaign for the people of Colac and district. We want all sides of politics to offer a better deal for this region.
We believe both major parties need to have strong candidates for the electorate, to ensure the electorate attracts the attention it deserves.
Labor failed to respond on multiple occasions to our requests for information on their campaign for Polwarth. To provide balance, the Colac Herald went to the former Labor candidate for Polwarth, Cr Crook, for his view.
We look forward to when the ALP is able to provide a candidate and we can report their views too.
Whether we publish your incorrect and defamatory comment is not a matter of “guts”, it’s about common decency. If you made such defamatory and untrue comments about someone who didn’t work here, we wouldn’t publish the comment at all.

  7. I was the endorsed candidate and I withdrew due to Health reasons. This information was readily available by calling the ALP head office and asking and there is also another artical last week by the Warrnambool Standard that announced I withdrew due to health reasons so this information was readily available.

    1. The ALP head office has made no information available about the Polwarth candidacy and has failed to respond to the Colac Herald’s requests for information.

Terry Mulder has done very little of anything for Polwarth during the term of this State Government. He has and continues to take the electorate for granted. Far from improvement, the Health and Education outcomes have deteriorated during the past four years. Just talk to nurses, ambulance employees and teachers and they will tell you the real story. He has not earned the right to be re-elected and neither has his government.

  9. MP. Mr. Terry Mulder refuses to acknowledge the Colac Ambulance Crisis which has contributed to numerous people’s deaths. He makes the statement in relation to health “Good health services”. This is simply not true because the State government has cut $617,000 in funding to the Colac Hospital and the urgent care reduces from 7 cubicles down to 3 cubicles each day at 3 pm with a reduction in Nursing staff at 3 pm too. Currently there is only one Ambulance available to service 20,000 people in the Colac catchment area, Colac needs two Ambulances to be available and the CFA to become back up first responders for when the Ambulances are busy on a job. Unfortunately although the Colac CFA are trained and ready and are equipped with Defibrillators Mr. Mulder will not go in to bat for Colac and allow them to be back up responders as the MFB have been in Melbourne since the year 2000. Colac is a great place to live but currently the chances of dying whilst waiting for an Ambulance are a disgrace.

  10. I might put my hand up to run against em… NOT! LoL

I haven’t seen any mailing for the election yet. Id like to get it soon so i can read and discuss it in plenty of time.
