APOLLO BAY football officials have appointed star defender Dean Scheetz to coach the Hawks in 2015.
Scheetz will take on the senior coaching duties from club champion Tyson Holt, who has coached the side for the past three seasons.
Club president Andrew Bazell said he was rapt to have the big man on board, as Scheetz was a perfect fit for the role.
“He’s such a great leader, he’s shown great leadership skills in his past two years at the club with the way he plays and trains,” Bazell said.
“He helps me train the under-17s as well so he’s got a good understanding of where our kids are at, because we want to encourage them to play senior football,” he said.
“We’re happy to keep Dean as a player as well, there’s been a lot of interest in him from other clubs.”
Scheetz won his second Apollo Bay club best-and-fairest award in two years on Friday night, winning the Hawks’ count ahead of 2014 midfield recruit Jarrod Wight.
“We’re very happy to have him on board as a player, he’s been great the past two years and won best-and-fairests both times,” Mr Bazell said.
“He’s a real competitor, he competes for every contest, he trains and plays hard and he’s great to have around the club,” he said.
