REIGNING midweek bowls premier Colac has begun its title defence with a thrilling win against Camperdown Golf this week.

The lakeside club clinched a two-shot victory against Camperdown Golf in the opening round of the season, despite only winning one of three rinks.

A big rink win from Dianne Hynes against Elizabeth Riches, 26-11, was enough to get Colac over the line.

“We were happy to start the season with a win, especially in the trying conditions that we had with rain and wind,” Hynes said.

“It was fairly even right through the game, we were five shots up on the last end and managed to hang on,” she said.

“You can never take Golf lightly, they’re always up amongst them.”

Fellow Colac skippers Leona Pekin and Carmel Watson lost their rinks against Rene Wyles, 20-25, and Jill Rantall, 19-23.

Hynes said her team was pleased to start the season with a win but had not set its expectations too high this season.

“All the teams are so competitive, it just depends who plays better on the day,” she said.

“We came from fourth to win last year, we battled at the start and came good at the right time, so it was good to start this season with a win.”

Meanwhile in other midweek matches, City downed Central, 79-68, Cobden downed Camperdown, 66-60, and Winchelsea proved too strong for newly-promoted Skipton, 81-66.
