One of Colac district football’s best young talents has joined South Colac.

Roos coach Tim Foley said officials were rapt to sign Birregurra small forward Zak Day, who crosses to the club following a very decorated junior career with the Saints.

The 20-year-old won multiple junior flags and league goalkicking awards with Birregurra, finishing with more than 200 goals at junior level, while also taking out the league’s under-17.5 best-and-fairest award in 2013.

Foley said Day, who has spent the past two seasons in the senior ranks, had recently moved to Colac and was eager to play at the Roos with good mates Harry Fennell and fellow former Saint Lewis Oborne.

“We’re certainly happy to have Zak on board, he’s come along to our pre-season training the past two weeks and from what we saw he’s looked impressive,” he said.

“He’s had a very decorated junior career, and we know he’s got plenty of talent so hopefully we can help him take the next step in his development in the senior ranks.”

Day notched up 43 senior games for Birregurra after making his debut in 2013, booting 30 goals in that time.

Meanwhile, the Roos have also welcomed Kieran Mawson back to the club.

Mawson, who spent this year with Colac Imperials, last played for the Roos in 2012, and notched up five senior games during a successful two-year period for the club.
