TV star suggests gun Roo

VFL club North Ballarat targeted South Colac star Ben Cox, pictured, following a suggestion from The Recruit winner Matt Eagles.

A suggestion from a reality television personality ultimately led to South Colac stars Ben Cox and Tim Speirs earning contracts with VFL club North Ballarat.

Roosters coach Marc Greig revealed to the Colac Herald that Matt Eagles, the 2016 winner of reality football program The Recruit, encouraged the Roosters to pursue Cox during the off-season.

Eagles spent the 2016 season playing with North Ballarat, and has since signed with the Brisbane Lions following his win on The Recruit.

Greig said Eagles had formed a friendship with Cox while the pair trialled to be part of the show late last year.

“We nearly got Ben mid-season in 2016,” Greig said.

“We had Matt Eagles playing at the club this season, we were looking for experienced players to add to our young list,” he said.

“Matt had met Ben through The Recruit, they remained mates, and he said ‘there’s a guy called Ben Cox kicking a few goals down Colac way. Give this guy a call’.”

Greig said he touched base with Cox in early August about the possibility of him joining the club for the 2017 season.

“We were going to get in contact before June 30 and possibly get him across this season, but I read that he really wanted to win a premiership with South Colac,” he said.
