Imps spearhead joins Bellarine league club

Colac Imperials tall Jake Kearney will join Bellarine league club Newcomb next season.

Two-time Colac Imperials leading goalkicker Jake Kearney is set to join Bellarine league club Newcomb next season.

New Imps coach Dan Casey confirmed the Geelong-based Kearney would part ways with the club after two years with the Cats.

He booted 37 goals for the Imps in his first year at the club, leading the team to a fifth-placed finish, and kicked 26 of the Imps’ 138 goals this year.

“I’ve spoken to all the playing group and Jake Kearney is the only confirmed departure at this stage, he’s going to Newcomb,” Casey said.

“He’s based in Geelong and he’s actually Rob Sims’ apprentice who I coached at Alvie, so I knew of it before I took on the role at Imps,” he said.

“It’s a shame to lose him because he’s been a handy player for Imps over the last few years.”

Kearney, Sims and fellow Alvie footballer Andrich De La Cruz all played together at Forrest in 2015 before the club went into recess.

Kearney then joined the Imps, while Sims and De La Cruz spent a year with Geelong district league club Thomson before crossing to Alvie this year.

Casey said he hoped to retain the remainder of the playing group, with young best-and-fairest winner Darcy Theodore the only other potential loss.

“We’ll have a few like Darcy Theodore training with Colac, and we’d never stand in the way of someone looking to have a crack at GFL footy,” he said.
