Ace start for new golf captain

Colac Golf Club’s Larayne McCoombe landed her first hole-in-one this week on the par-three seventh hole during competition. Larayne is club’s new ladies’ captain, replacing Lorraine Matthews.

Golfer Larayne McCoombe looks set to be an ace acquisition to the Colac Golf Club in her new role as ladies’ captain.

Larayne enjoyed a pleasant surprise during competition on Tuesday afternoon when her ball was sitting at the bottom of the cup on the seventh hole.

The 29-handicapper claimed her first hole-in-one a decade after taking up the sport, earning bragging rights at home with her husband and committed Colac golfer Murray, who is yet to achieve the feat after 40 years in the game.

Larayne said she and her playing partners Jenny Lyness and Isobel Spokes had initially thought her tee shot had flown the green on the 115-metre par-three seventh hole.

“It’s something I never thought I’d get, not with the way I play, I’m usually happy to just hit the green,” she said.

“It was on the seventh, and it was just a bit of luck.

“I hit a good shot on with my five-rescue, which usually goes pretty straight, but we thought it went over the back.

“When we got up to the green we definitely thought it had gone through, but Jenny Lyness, who I was playing with, had a look in the hole and she gave me this look and said, ‘here it is’, which was a nice surprise.”
