Young Kooka’s second chance

Colac’s Darcy Howard is among eight players in the mix to make their Country Basketball League finals debut when the Kookas host Ararat in a semi-final tomorrow night. He is pictured driving past Ararat’s Sam Cronin when the teams last met at Colac’s Bluewater stadium in round two.

Colac basketballer Darcy Howard will get a second chance to play in Country Basketball League finals two years after a knee injury cost him his first opportunity.

Howard, 19, is among eight players in the mix to make their CBL finals debut with the Colac Kookas in their semi-final clash against Ararat tomorrow night.

The Trinity College Colac graduate was in his first year with the senior Kookas when the club last played finals in 2016, but injury sidelined him in the second half of the season.

Howard said he was looking forward to another finals opportunity in front of a home crowd at Colac’s Bluewater stadium.

“It will be exciting, it’ll be a first for me and the other younger boys, hopefully we get a bumper crowd and get them cheering,” he said.

“I missed out in my first year, I ended up with patella tendonitis so I stepped away from basketball a bit, and I was still playing in the under-18s so I wasn’t quite in that rotation by the time finals came.”
