Getting cut motivates Falcon

Colac footballer Clay Mulgrew hopes to cement his spot in the Geelong Falcons’ team after making his debut on the weekend.

Colac footballer Clay Mulgrew says being cut from the Geelong Falcons’ squad last year was an eye-opening experience.

Mulgrew did a whole pre-season with the TAC Cup club last year before losing his spot on the eve of the 2017 season.

So when he got another opportunity this season, he made sure he didn’t blow it.

“Being cut last year definitely gave me motivation to come back and have a better crack at it,” Mulgrew said after making his TAC Cup debut on the weekend.

“It was pretty disappointing, I got through all the pre-season, played in the first practice match and then got cut,” he said.

“But looking back, I probably didn’t deserve it, I wasn’t really giving it 100 per cent and with elite programs like that you get found out pretty quickly.

“So I made sure if I got another chance I’d make the most of it.”

Mulgrew was one of nine Colac district footballers who earned a spot on the Falcons’ primary and development lists this season.
