Queensland Basketball League team Cairns Marlins has been quick to secure the services of Colac export Nathan Lemke following his five years in the American college system.
Lemke, 23, will graduate from South Carolina’s Coker College this month before flying home to Australia, where he will relocate to Cairns in Queensland’s north.
Marlins head coach and Lemke’s former Geelong Supercats mentor Jamie O’Loughlin lured the 209-centimetre Lemke to the QBL league club.
O’Loughlin is also an assistant coach for the Cairns Taipans’ National Basketball League team.
Lemke, speaking to the Colac Herald from South Carolina, said he was excited to step into the semi-professional ranks following four seasons with Indiana University of Pennsylvania and Coker College in National Collegiate Athletic Association’s Division II system.
“Talks started back in mid-January, Jamie reached out to me to see what I was up to after I was done here and what my career plans were so we just thought we’d keep in touch and see where we end up and it just kind of worked out,” Lemke said.
“The most appealing thing would definitely be playing and training under a coach I know has been successful. The weather’s not too bad up there either,” he said.
