District farmers win dairy sector honour

Pomborneit dairy farmers Terry and Joanne Place won the Employer Award at Wednesday’s Great South West Dairy Awards.

Pomborneit dairy farmers Terry and Joanne Place earned honours as top employers at this year’s Great South West Dairy Awards.

WestVic Dairy’s Regional Manager Lindsay Ferguson said the couple had taken home Wednesday night’s Employer Award “for their approach to creating an open and trusting engagement with their staff”.

Mr Place said the award showed the farm, which is milking about 420 cattle, was “doing the right things” by offering training opportunities and reinforcing safety.
“Safety wise, on our farm, it’s not just the workers but my family as well,” Mr Place said.

“Training wise, we try and give them opportunities, in the last 12 months we did a fertility course that the boys all did and also with my brothers through WestVic Dairy.”

He said the farm employed two full-time workers and two part-time workers, including his son and nephew.

“We just discuss what is going on in the farm and what needs to be done and what needs to be fixed,” Mr Place said.

But he said the success of his farm was also due to the support of his five brothers who own three other farms in the Camperdown region.

“They run their services themselves, but just if we need a hand we get in and help each other,” Mr Place said.
