Birregurra football officials have ruled out champion midfielder Mick Davis for this weekend’s Colac district football grand final due to injury.
Saints coach Glen Darroch said Davis had failed to recover from an ankle injury he suffered late in the Saints’ second semi-final victory against Lorne, and would miss Saturday’s grand final rematch against the Dolphins.
“Mick Davis won’t play, he’s got a bit of ligament damage, I don’t know the technical terms but he hasn’t come up at all,” Darroch said.
“He’s off crutches, but he’s not confident he’ll be able to run the game out, he won’t be able to twist and turn like he’d like to,” he said.
“It’s a massive blow, and people will make a big deal of it, but we’ve managed without Michael Bolitho, Josh Weatherhead and Ben Boseley all year, and Matt Cherry for the last month, it just gives a couple of guys who have been playing all year an opportunity to step up.”
Darroch said Davis would still push to play in his seventh grand final with the Saints, but admitted it was unlikely.
“There’s two ways we could go about it; we could kid ourselves and leave it until Saturday to make a decision, or we could prepare our team to play without him,” he said,
“He’ll still have a crack, but we’re pretty confident he won’t be playing.”
