Same club, but new faces

Birregurra young guns Roy Armistead, Darcy Collins and Nick Arnold are among Saints in the mix for their first senior grand final.

While Birregurra is in pursuit of its third straight Colac district football premiership this weekend, the Saints could have as many as eight first-time senior grand finalists.

New coach Glen Darroch has put a focus on developing the club’s young players in his first year in charge, with former Saints juniors Roy Armistead, Darcy Collins, Nick Arnold and Tom Wheadon all featuring in the Saints’ second semi-final team, while young ruckman Indy Paddick also played the majority of the year in the seniors.

The club also recruited strongly; defenders Daniel Sprigg, Sean O’Neill and utility Chad Baker have all slotted into the side and helped lead the Saints in their pursuit of a third straight flag.

The Saints will finalise their grand final team tomorrow night, with wingman Matty Cherry and utility Sam Green both likely to return to the side.

“It’s what you play for at the end of the day,” Darroch said of the grand final.

“It’s a good reward for effort, and it’s a good reward for some of the new guys that have come into the club, and some of the guys who have missed out in previous years who are playing bigger roles,” he said.
