Senior basketball teams call on teenage trio

Zara Walters was among three teenagers who made their Country Basketball League senior debuts.

The future of Colac basketball was on show over the weekend as three teenagers made their Country Basketball League senior debuts.

At 14, Zara Walters became the youngest Colac player to play CBL, featuring in the Lady Kookas’ win against Terang on Saturday, and loss to Geelong the following day.

She turned 15 on Sunday.

The Kookas’ men’s team called on young duo Mitchell Thornton and Isaac Moran for Sunday’s clash with Geelong after losing Bailey Scott and Denver Murnane to Schoolies celebrations.

Thornton and Moran featured in key moments late in the 78-83 loss which went into overtime, after Nathan Lemke, who led all scorers with 25 points, Jordan Lingard and Matthew Lloyd fouled out, while Steve Packer got injured.

Colac women’s coach Hayley Dewar said her team pursued Walters after learning it would lose 2017-18 CBL All-Star Emma Hawker to a trip to Tanzania for a month.
