Colac Otway Shire mayor Jason Schram has dug into his own pocket to decorate trees in central Colac for Christmas, after the council was unable to hang decorations from poles.
Cr Schram and about half-a-dozen children put tinsel on trees on the southern side of Memorial Square on Friday, following community concern about the lack of Christmas decorations in central Colac.
The tinsel is not a council-led initiative, with Cr Schram saying he had paid for the tinsel himself to “brighten up the street a bit”.
Cr Schram also plans to move a motion at Wednesday night’s council meeting to have the council install all its Christmas decorations by November 30 each year.
Cr Schram said his motion, if successful, would ensure that council officers will “set a timeline each year” to put up displays, which would “spread the Christmas cheer” and “encourage people to shop locally with an inviting scene”.
In a council statement last week, Cr Schram explained that the council had been unable to put up decorations in Colac after Powercor raised concerns last Christmas that the decorations could destabilise power poles.
