Push for night footy on Anzac weekend

Simpson Football Netball Club is pushing to introduce Anzac Day night matches to the Colac district league from 2020.

New Tigers president Mick Royal said the club was looking into a standalone match on the national day of remembrance, with Colac’s Central Reserve and Western Oval both capable of hosting night matches by then.

Colac district league clubs Irrewarra-Beeac and Lorne have both pushed for Anzac Day matches in the past, but plans often fall through due to rules regarding football and netball on the public holiday.

League rules prohibit clubs from hosting matches or charging entry on Anzac Day before 1pm.

“We’re just floating the idea at this stage, but we thought if we hosted night games we could fit it all in after 1pm,” Mr Royal said.

“It’s something I’ve thought about doing for a while, everyone thinks about these things but the logistics make it difficult,” he said.

“But we looked at the calendar and tried to find a date when Anzac Day falls around the weekend, because it’d make it a bit hard on the players and bar sales if people have to work the next day.”
