Vehicle engulfed beside Princes Highway

Fire gutted a car next to the Princes Highway near Winchelsea, but the occupants escaped unharmed.

A fire has gutted a car and held up traffic on the Princes Highway near Winchelsea.

Authorities had to close the highway’s west-bound lane on Friday afternoon after a car towing a caravan caught on fire on the roadside.

Winchelsea Fire Brigade captain Rod Taylor said the car was travelling towards Colac on the Princes Highway when the driver noticed issues with the engine and pulled off the road.

The car’s occupants detached the caravan from the car and moved it away.

“By that time under the bonnet there were flames and smoke and it’s quickly spread and involved the entire car,” Mr Taylor said.
