A Colac school principal is questioning why the city no longer has an outdoor pool, and wants one to become a priority for civic leaders.
Sacred Heart Primary principal Jack Lenaghan said the school had hosted its swimming sports at Winchelsea’s outdoor pool for the past two years because Colac’s indoor pool was unable to seat the whole school.
“You sit under shady trees and grass, that’s what pools really are,” Mr Lenaghan said of the event at Winchelsea.
Colac Otway Shire mayor Jason Schram said he was aware of local schools “screaming out” for 50-metre pool, and said he wanted to see the council do a business case for a possible second pool with an outdoor or indoor option.
Mr Lenaghan said the indoor pool at Colac’s Bluewater Leisure Centre was ideal for his students learning to swim because people could swim there all year, but believed an outdoor alternative would benefit local schools’ swimming events and engender a sense of community.
“I think it is just something for the social lives of our kids,” Mr Lenaghan said.
