Three-goal hauls from new recruit Dustin Walters and back-up ruckman Matt Garner were among the highlights from the Colac Tigers’ practice match victory over Balwyn.
The Tigers impressed across the ground in 15.5 (95) to 8.13 (61) win over the Eastern Football League powerhouse, featuring new recruit; former Colac and Lorne footballer Kane Smartt.
Walters, a former Alvie forward, was the only new recruit to feature in the senior side, but Leersen said he regarded players like Ben McCarthy and Tyler Murnane as new recruits after they missed large chunks of the 2018 Geelong Football League season with injury.
Leersen said the Tigers had “12 to 14” unavailable for the clash, including Zach Zdybel, Campbell Floyd and Adam Garner, who played in Geelong’s VFL practice match loss to Essendon on Thursday.
Key talls Jack Melican and Jake McGuane had a wedding, forward Travis Woodmason has just welcomed a new child, and Liam McGuane was playing in Alvie’s Colac district cricket grand final.
“There were really good signs early,” Leersen said.
