Rising star’s bond with her golfing idol

Colac’s Georgia Fish’s impressive start to her golf career has led the 18-year-old to a spot on Metropolitan’s senior pennant team and a Golf Australia internship.

Georgia Fish says she had no idea she’d end up living under the same roof as her golfing idol when the Trinity College Colac graduate set out on her gap-year in 2019.

But the Colac golfer’s promising start to her career has landed her a special opportunity in the sport she has grown to love.

Fish sometimes boards at professional golfer Stacey Peters’ Melbourne home after Golf Australia offered Fish an internship at Golf Australia.

Peters is one of the Colac district’s greatest golfing exports.

The Cressy local enjoyed a successful junior career before bursting onto the professional scene with wins at the French and Spanish Opens in 2012 and a title at her home event, the Victorian Open, in 2013.

Fish said spending time with Peters, nee Keating, and her husband Darren was “surreal”, but the enthusiastic young athlete was eager to ask 32-year-old Keating for as much golfing advice as she could.

“She was my idol, so it’s surreal,” she said.

“She’s been awesome and her husband is amazing as well, they’ve been lovely.

“I try and get all the knowledge I can get from her, we just talk about golf whenever we can, and I’ll be asking a lot of stuff from her during pennant season.”

Fish has been included in Victorian junior squads, held a spot in the Barwon Junior Sports Academy and already has a Colac senior women’s club championship next to her name after following her aunt and Colac member Robyn Vesey into the sport as an 11-year-old.

The now 18-year-old, who hopes to pursue a career in golf through a university degree in sport and exercise science, said spending time in Golf Australia’s Melbourne offices was an opportunity too good to pass up.
