Family pays tribute to father-son lifesavers

Cooriemungle’s Powell family is mourning Ross and Andrew Powell, who died rescuing a man at Port Campbell on Easter Sunday. The father and son worked and volunteered side by side.

The family of Cooriemungle’s Ross and Andrew Powell will remember the men as gentle, compassionate, loving and selfless, while the community mourns the loss of two likeable and dedicated local leaders.

Ross, 71, and Andrew, 32, drowned while rescuing a swimmer at Port Campbell on Easter Sunday.

The lifelong surf lifesavers were attempting to help a swimmer when their boat flipped in powerful surf at the mouth of Sherbrooke River at 10.20am.

Both men died in the water, with a third lifesaver airlifted to the Alfred Hospital.

Ross leaves behind his loving wife Val and four children; Brett, Natalie, Dale and Kerryn.

Andy leaves his partner Amber, who the family has said is expecting their first child in August.

The family described the loss in a public statement.
