Colac lawn bowler Ken Hanson has ruled himself out of the 2022 Commonwealth Games in England after calling time on his Australian representative career.
Hanson told the Colac Herald he had decided to end his Jackaroos stint on a high after leading Australia’s para-athlete triples team to a thrilling gold medal at last year’s Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast.
The City bowls legend said he was unable to commit to the strenuous calendar for an international bowler going forward, ruling himself out for the 2022 Games at Birmingham, England.
“I’m starting to feel my age a bit more,” Hanson, 69, said.
“And you think to yourself, there’s over three years before we get to Birmingham, and if you commit you’ve got to commit properly,” he said.
“And I just didn’t think I’d be able to do that.
“From the moment I was selected in the initial squad until the Commonwealth games finished I have squeezed out every ounce of energy that I had.
“There is not much left.
“I’d fairly well made up my mind earlier in the year and spoken to (Australian coach) Steve Glasson about it, he said he’d like to have me in the team but he understood.”
