Talented tradesman is off to world titles

A skilled Elliminyt tradie will be Australia’s sole joinery competitor at an international competition in Russia, where he’ll face the world’s best young joiners.

Tom Neave, 22, will compete in August against at least 20 international joiners, with competitors judged on their finished work after they build the same project in a set timeframe.

The Spence Construction employee last weekend secured his spot on the Australian team, known as the Skillaroos, after placing third in a Melbourne-based challenge against seven other nations.

“Basically I had to make a door frame that sat inside another frame; it was a two-dimensional component that sat inside a three-dimensional component. A few curves and different angles,” Tom said.

Tom, needing to place fourth to confirm his place in the Australian delegation, finished just one point ahead of a contestant from the United Kingdom and behind China and Taiwan.
