Big celebration for centenarian

Edith Stephens, right, celebrated her 100th birthday alongside her 103-year-old sister Violet, left, and their cousin Dorothy Harris, as well as dozens of family members.

A former Eurack and Beeac woman who managed the Stonyford post office for more than 30 years has celebrated her 100th birthday.

Edith Stephens turned 100 on May 7 and celebrated her birthday on Mother’s Day at Grovedale, where she lives independently.

Mrs Stephens managed the Stonyford post office, mail run and telephone exchange with her husband Frank from 1947 to 1983, raising their eight children in an attached residence.

Her husband died in 1978, with Edith continuing the mail run until the post office closed five years later.

Mrs Stephens said her family had good times at the Stonyford post office but working and raising a family kept her busy.
