Alvie joins Lorne for Easter battle

Lorne’s Joel Tipping and Alvie’s Kurt Spence and their teammates will face off in the next two Easter showdowns.

Alvie is set to replace Birregurra in Colac district football and netball’s annual Easter Saturday showdown at Lorne for the next two years.

Swans officials confirmed this week that they had accepted an offer from Lorne Football Netball Club to take part in its standalone blockbuster for the 2020 and 2021 seasons.

Birregurra has faced Lorne in the past five Easter match-ups, replacing Apollo Bay which battled the Dolphins in 2013 and ‘14.

Alvie club president Frank Eldridge said the Swans were eager to be part of one of the biggest Colac district league matches of the year outside of grand final day.

“After Birre indicated they weren’t taking part in 2020 Lorne’s first option was us, they thought we had something to bring to the table,” Mr Eldridge said.

“The positive for us is we get to play in front of a very big crowd, and we’re really happy to be given the chance to go down and play in front of something like two-and-a-half to 3000 people,” he said.

Lorne will host both Easter match-ups for the next two years, with the two clubs to split the gate takings.

Mr Eldridge said spectators were in for a treat if the teams’ round 15 clash was anything to go by, with the Dolphins winning a second-versus-third thriller by seven points after trailing most of the day.
