Bay’s win for the history books

Apollo Bay players and supporters celebrate the team’s first semi-final win over Birregurra on Sunday

“It has to be the greatest win I’ve had as a senior footballer.”

Apollo Bay co-captain Jarrod Wight says the Hawks’ first semi-final victory against Birregurra in extra time has to go down as one of the greatest games in league history.

Players sung the song with gusto in front of a packed house of Apollo Bay supporters, after the club won a spot in its first preliminary final since 2007.

“It means so much to the town, and it means so much to the team,” Wight said after yesterday’s 10.16 (76) to 9.11 (65) victory.

“We’ve been working so hard towards it, it was just sheer elation after the game,” he said.

“I never want to play an overtime game again though.”

Scores were level after a rollercoaster four quarters at Colac’s Central Reserve yesterday.

The Bay had the majority of the play throughout the match, but with scores level at 8.15 (63) to 9.9 (63) an extra five minutes each way were needed.
