Coaching call-up for young Cat, 21

Colac Imperials’ Stewy McCann will become one of the youngest coaches in Colac district league history tomorrow.

“You don’t usually get these opportunities so it’s a great from a club point of view to see if he could be the next coach.”

Colac district senior football mentor Dan Casey says Colac Imperials officials didn’t hesitate when Stewy McCann asked to spend a week as the club’s head coach.

The club’s 21-year-old assistant coach under Casey will take the reins for a one-off match as the Cats do battle with Birregurra tomorrow.

Casey said McCann led the side’s training sessions this week, and took control of the team selection and speaking duties to the rest of the club last night.

He said McCann would be one of the youngest people to lead a side as head coach in Colac district football history, and the Imperials were excited to see how he fared.

“I was 25 when I went and coached Irrewarra-Beeac and that was considered pretty young, so I reckon he would be,” Casey said.

“With a young group, that’s probably what Stewy’s concern was, would he have their respect, and I think he does now with the way he plays.

“Knowing the playing group and knowing the way he leads and plays on the field, I don’t think he’ll have any trouble with that.

“I’ll try and not put my two bob’s worth in which will be hard, but we’ll try and just let him take control, just help him with match-ups and be there to support him.”
