Saint answers SOS call

Jarrod Groves, pictured with son Theo, is among a host of footballers who stepped up during Birregurra’s injury crisis, and led the club to a top-three finish.

Birregurra has players like Jarrod Groves to thank for helping the Saints reach finals this season.

The 23-year-old had only ever played reserves football during the past six years with Birregurra and his former club Alvie.

But as the Saints encountered one of the roughest runs of injuries in recent history, it was players like Groves who answered the SOS call and helped the team reach the top three.

Groves said the senior call-up in round nine this year had come as a shock, but he has held his spot in the side since, helping fill the void left by champion defender Stephen Salajan.

Salajan is set to return tomorrow, putting Groves’ spot in doubt, but the young Saint said he has relished the opportunity.

“I’m happy to play wherever I’m needed, whether that’s reserves or seniors,” Groves said.

“This was the first year I’d played senior football, it was a little bit of a surprise, I’d always just played twos.

“It’s been good fun, but a good challenge as well.
