Back-to-back premierships softens blow for footballer

Co-captains Remy Duynhoven and Sienna Mallon led the Western Eagles to back-to-back flags in the 13-and-under netball competition.

A best-on-court display in a netball premiership side eased the pain of missing a football grand final for Western Eagles all-rounder Sienna Mallon.

The self-confessed footy tragic had juggled playing 13-and-under netball with football for the club’s under-13 and under-15 sides this year, while also suiting up for Colac Imperials’ underage women’s teams on a Sunday.

But Mallon had to choose between the codes during the CDFNL grand final weekend, after the Eagles’ netball decider clashed with the under-13 football grand final.

The decision paid off for the 13-year-old, who played a starring role for the Eagles in their commanding win against Birregurra, which landed the talented young squad back-to-back premierships.

“I was going to play, but they ran the game earlier so it was a bit disappointing,” Mallon said.

“But I played netball most of the year and I was co-captain as well.”

Mallon, a Geelong-mad AFL fan, said footy was her priority after the 13-year-old has enjoyed a promising start to journey in the sport.
