Stoneyford continues to set the benchmark for recruiting international players, with the reigning premier signing an England under-19 cricketer to join the club this summer.
Leader Dom Dare said talented batsman Savin Perera had committed to the Maroon Caps, joining returning Canadian Farooq Qureshi in their ranks in 2019-20.
Sri Lankan-born Perera represented England at last year’s Under-19 World Cup which featured Canadian Arslan Khan, who helped Stoneyford win its fifth flag in six seasons last summer.
Khan departed the Maroon Caps and will join the Geelong Cricket Association when he returns to Australia for the upcoming season.
But Dare said Perera, a left-handed top-order batsman who also bowls spin, spoke with Khan about travelling to Australia to join the Maroon Caps.
Perera, who scored 84 for England in an underage international against South Africa two years ago and averaged 17 with the bat at last year’s World Cup, has also played for Middlesex in England’s County league.
“He played in the same World Cup as Arslan who put in a good report for our club,” Dare said.
“He gave him the run down of what it’s like, so we’re thrilled,” he said.
