Social media phenomenon Habbatron might overshadow former English County cricketer George Edwards’ first game at Stoneyford this weekend.
The Maroon Caps have secured Instagram sensation Gareth Haeberle, aka Habbatron, after he revealed to the Colac Herald he was planning to relocate to the district.
The cult hero, who has more than 28,000 Instagram followers, is also no slouch on the cricket field.
Haeberle has “had more clubs than Jack Nicklaus”, including stints in top-flight Premier cricket with Richmond alongside export Gavin Holland and at Geelong with Australian limited-overs skipper Aaron Finch.
He said he was excited to taste more success during his time at Stoneyford.
Haeberle will debut for the club this weekend alongside international recruit Edwards, who is set to land in Australia tomorrow from England, when the reigning premier hosts City United at Pirron Yallock.
“I think I’ve had four or five clubs in the Geelong league and I’ve played in about six different leagues,” he said.
“I played a lot of cricket at Grovedale and won a few flags, so I’m looking to add a bit more silverware to the cabinet that’s for sure.”
Haeberle said he was pointed Stoneyford’s way through his relationship with Bryan Thomas, who mentored Maroon Caps skipper Dom Dare and star signing Ezrah Robertson in the Barwon Rockets under-18 pathway program.
