District firefighters join in NSW efforts

Forest Fire Management Victoria and CFA firefighters travelled to New South Wales to combine efforts in fighting devastating bushfires.

Colac and district firefighters have started the bushfire season early, travelling to New South Wales to support the efforts in fighting massive bushfires.

Forest Fire Management Victoria firefighters from Colac, Anglesea, Barwon Downs and Geelong departed on Friday for a five-day deployment.

The 18-person taskforce will return today after being based at Glen Innes on the Northern Tablelands in New South Wales.

The team was tasked to the Gulf Road fire in the Torrington district and protected properties, provided first attack on new fire fronts, warned communities and inspected properties.

Forest Fire Management Barwon south west regional agency commander Hamish Martin said the team worked through extreme conditions to help keep communities safe.
