After almost four decades as the reigning sound of Colac’s weddings, balls, swings and school dances, the Frank Lawrence Old Time Dance Band will close on a dulcet note.
Drummer and singer Frank Lawrence, saxophonist Billy Simmonds, and keyboardist Judy Comley, will play their final show together on Saturday.
The iconic band has played just about everywhere in Colac and district, from local halls, dances and debutant balls, to weddings, nursing homes and school socials; playing for audiences around the region and to generations of the same families.
Frank, 83, has played music since the age of 15, inspired by Colac’s Pipe Band which he later joined and played with for 17 years. He started his dance band almost 40 years ago.
“I started playing dance band stuff and haven’t regretted it one little bit,” Frank said.
He paid tribute to the band members he had played with throughout the years.
“People come up to me, as recently as a fortnight ago, and say ‘Frankie, do you remember playing for my wedding?’ I said, ‘how long ago?’; it was 45 years ago,” Frank said.
“Music is a therapy and we’ve proven that. “It’s the end of an era,” he said.
