Admiral’s Joker aims for ticket to All Star Mile

Local trainer Kylie Vella says stable star Admiral’s Joker has what it takes to win the world’s richest mile race.

Vella and her husband Steve live at Linton, about an hour from Colac, but do most of their gallop work at the Colac Turf Club.

Vella said the stable was busy lobbying for Admiral’s Joker to gain a spot in March’s All Star Mile; horses can either be voted into the race by the general public, or are guaranteed a spot if they win either the Futurity Stakes or Blamey Stakes in February.

The Vellas and Admiral’s Joker will be in Colac for Colac Turf Club’s Breakfast with the Stars in the lead up to February 16’s Colac Gold Cup, which Vella said she hoped would garner a few votes for her star gelding.

“You actually have to get in by public vote, we’re trying to promote him and get some votes from the people of Colac and hopefully get him into the race,” she said.

Vella said her Linton-based stables were abuzz with potential this season, with Admiral’s Joker the most promising horse she’s trained in recent times; he’s had six wins and five places from just 14 starts.

“We did try to get him into a couple of big races over the carnival but he was second emergency and first emergency, so he didn’t get a run, but if he does run in the All Star Mile it will be the biggest race we’ve ever had a horse in,” she said.
