Anzac Day showdown called off

Two Colac district league football-netball clubs have reportedly canned plans to go head to head under lights on Anzac Day this year.

Birregurra president Mick Paddick confirmed the Saints and Simpson had made the call with fears the facilities at Colac’s Central Reserve would not be available in time for the April 25 showdown.

Six clubs had committed to play under lights on Anzac Day this year, which falls on a Saturday.

Mr Paddick said Birregurra and Simpson would now play with the remaining clubs on the following Sunday.

“We were going to play at Central but it was unlikely the lights and the netball courts would be ready,” he said.

“We thought about splitting the football games, with juniors on the back oval (at Colac Secondary College) but without netball courts we’d be split over three venues and we didn’t want that.

“So we reached an agreement to play Simpson on the Sunday, and we’d look to try and host Anzac Day football again next year.”

Four clubs will still go head to head on Anzac Day this year, with Colac Imperials hosting the Western Eagles at Western Oval, and Lorne hosting Irrewarra-Beeac at Stribling Reserve.
