City’s depth stacks up against Stoneyford

Ladder leader City United claimed its biggest scalp of the 2019-20 cricket season on Saturday, when the Knights knocked off the premiers of the past four seasons Stoneyford in a see-sawing battle at Colac’s Eastern Reserve on Saturday. City United cricketers showcased the club’s depth during a season-defining win against Colac district powerhouse Stoneyford.

The Knights extended their lead on the premiers of the past four seasons at the top of the CDCA ladder after the round 11 contest at Eastern Reserve.

City sent the Maroon Caps in to the bat and got off to a flying start, removing Dare brothers Joe and Lincoln cheaply before claiming the scalps of in-form batsmen Savin Perera for 12 runs and Dom Dare, 24.

The visiting Maroon Caps managed to reach 137 thanks to late runs to recruits Joel Menzies, 39, and Ezrah Robertson, 28.

All six of the Knights’ bowlers claimed wickets, with Shane Currie and Sri Lankan pair Jagath Poorna and Achira Eranga taking two each.

“We bowled well at the start,” City skipper Sam Cardinal said.

“I think we had them about 6-60, but credit to them that they got to 137.

“But we’ve bowled as a unit before Christmas, so it was good to pick up where we left off with that.”
