Colac shooter on track for Tokyo selection

Colac Gun Club member Penny Smith’s chances of representing Australia at the Tokyo Olympics this year have recieved a boost.

Colac shooter Penny Smith continues to press her case for Olympic selection for this year’s Tokyo games after strong outings on the national stage.

Smith is leading the race in her class for Olympic selection following her performances at the Commonwealth and National Championships in New South Wales.

The Colac Gun Club member recorded qualifying scores in the women’s trap, before eventually finishing fourth on Saturday behind New Zealand’s Natalie Rooney.

Smith produced a qualifying score of 115 out of 125 shots leading up to the final.

Her strong results earlier in the week at Newcastle put her in the lead for the race to Tokyo with 239 points ahead of Laetisha Scanlan, 231, and Catherine Skinner, 223.

To win selection for the Tokyo Olympics, the athletes’ three best scores from four selection events in each discipline will be tallied with the overall leader in each discipline automatically securing an Olympic berth.
