Redbacks rising star suffers injury blow

Irrewarra cricket officials are hopeful opening bowler Josh McDonald will be back steaming in to bowl by the season’s end after he injured an ankle preparing for Country Week.

Irrewarra remains hopeful young spearhead Josh McDonald will return to full fitness nearing cricket finals after he suffered a serious ankle injury.

The young quick was dealt the blow while preparing for the Colac district’s under-17 side’s Country Week carnival at Warrnambool, which wraps up today.

Redbacks skipper David Jackson said the setback could sideline McDonald for up to six weeks, with club officials eyeing the 17-year-old to recover ahead of the final home-and-away rounds.

McDonald has been a revelation for the Redbacks in recent seasons, claiming 45 wickets since debuting back in 2017.

He has gone to another level this summer and leads third-placed Irrewarra for wickets in 2019-20, while sitting fifth in the league after taking 12 scalps at an average of 13.

“Unluckily we had an injury to Josh McDonald and he’ll likely be missing the next six weeks,” Jackson said.

“He’s been pivotal to us this season,” he said.
