Victoria’s COVID commander Jeroen Weimar has confirmed that social gatherings were the transmission route for Colac’s new COVID-19 cases today, not workplace transmission.

Speaking at the state’s daily COVID-19 briefing, Mr Weimar said Colac had five new cases yesterday.

Three were associated with Australian Lamb Company and two were related cases.

But Mr Weimar said there was no evidence so far of transmission at ALC’s Colac site.

Instead he said the positive cases were linked via social gatherings.

“Can I just stress my huge thanks to the Australian Lamb Company for their fantastic work over a long year in terms of improving COVID-safe protocols, supporting their workforce to get vaccinated, we are seeing very high levels of vaccination amongst the workforce,” Mr Weimar said.

“Although we’re testing all the workforce the site is currently closed, we don’t have any evidence yet of transmission at the site,” he said.

“What we’ve seen are social gatherings again, dare I say grand final parties, which have caused the spread of those cases so far in Colac.”

There are 71 new cases in regional Victoria in today’s figures.

These include one new case in Corangamite Shire, one in Surf Coast, one at Warrnambool and seven at Geelong.
